Welcome to the Chrono
Trigger novel excerpts page! As the name suggests, on this page, you
will be treated to several selected excerpts scattered throughout the rough
draft and edited chapters of the novel. Much of the novel has only been
written by hand at this point, so please
understand that many of these excerpts are coming from a rough draft and that
they may be, at any time and without notice, changed, revised, or removed from
the novel. In any case, no chapter is really "finished" until
it's published, which I faithfully hope will be a reality in the future.
I also ask you for your trust in that you
will not manipulate or reproduce these excerpts on any other site without
permission from me, the author. You can always email me at novelist@chronotrigger.info.
Thank you and enjoy!
"There are always those who find a suitable peace in
the simple realm of darkness. Sometimes our own jumbled stories are told
in our dreams, where anything can happen. Then there is the sudden tug
from reality..."
--Chapter 2: The Millennial Fair
"'`Tis a wretched figure...Nary is its honoree worthy of
the stone twas carved from nor the breath of life he breathes."
--Frog in Chapter 4: The Queen is Gone
"Only now did [Crono] understand that perhaps even a
person raised in the envied refuge of royalty, the life that any commoner would
rather have chosen, would perhaps have chosen to give it all up if offered the
chance. Now he saw her there, standing alone in her tears with no one to
relate to. All of his life he had been consumed by the misconceptions that
the spoiled and pampered royal family lived in perfection without a single
trouble to call their own. Only now, after meeting Marle, did he realize
how wrong he had been..."
--Chapter 7: Above the System
"Crono simply looked towards the ruins in the distance,
responding sagely, 'All you have to do is plant a seed...'"
--Chapter 8: Beyond the Ruins
"The imps proved to be very pleasant hosts to the strange
travelers. Soon, every leftover in the house was gone as they stuffed down bowls
of fern-leaf chili, plates of pitted cherries with pepper cream dip, slices of sugar
coated ham, and more plates of double layered apple cream pie. Admittedly, the
meal was a bit unusual, but sure beat the portions of giant, ash covered rat offered
in the future."
--Chapter 11: The Village of Magic
"From under the mystical veil stood the most hideous of all
known Mystics. Structured entirely by the bones of departed Mystics and humans,
a gargantuan, one-'eyed' monster skeleton stood ahead of them..."
--Chapter 12: The Hero Appears
"[Lucca] turned quickly. 'We made that victory!
Well, practically, anyway...Guardia would have lost nearly every involved soldier in
that battle. I remember it now...I've read about a battle in history where a
monster, described as a fire-breathing demon, "sent every good Knight to his
maker."' Crono and Marle were silent. 'Don't you see? The
Knight Captain and his men were, historically speaking, supposed to die there!
That second wave of men from the castle, after losing most of their lives, would've
"driven the demon to sea, where the waters tamed the beast and the victory was
sealed..."'"
--Chapter 12: The Hero Appears
"'Good sir,' began Crono, 'We are on a quest for the Hero,
whom we have heard was from this village. Can you help us to locate him?'
"'The Hero is, indeed, a boy from this village. Tata is
his name.'"
--Chapter 13: Tata to the Frog
"Lucca rolled up her olive sleeves and took hold of the dirt
soiled, mold laden rope ladder, stretching its old fibers with her weight, 'All
right then...Let's change history.'"
--Chapter 14: The Legendary Heroes?
"'Then there's still hope,' said Lucca, 'because you have the
medal.'
Frog shook his head, now staring at the dirt. 'I can do
naught.' He simply turned and began to move away from them, muttering,
'The hopes of the Hero perished with this great sword...'"
--Chapter 15: A Legend Revised
"'Dancing was never my thing.' [Lucca] raised her head,
perceiving a small group of villagers approaching. 'Uh oh...'
Within the approaching group were men, women, and children.
As they neared, one small girl ran up to Lucca and pulled at her tunic.
'You wear odd skins.'
'It's called cloth.'"
--Chapter 16: The Rare Red Rock
"[Marle] leaned up, resting her elbows against her knees.
'Gee, Crono, just think about it. Isn't it hard to imagine all that we've
seen in the past four days?'
Crono nodded calmly and stretched himself out, still against
the bole of the tree. 'I know--stuff like being thrown in jail, racing an
insane robot, and talking to a humanoid frog! Those are the memories that
stick with you.'"
--Chapter 18: The Masamune!
"King Guardia stood as well, replying, 'But Cyrus, the
Kingdom needs you! Leene and I need you!'
'Your Majesty, you must know that this is the time for
action--and for hope. I assure you that the finest Knights of the squadron
will be here to protect you both.'
The King came near to Cyrus until only one step above him and
placed a hand on his shoulder. 'All but the finest, Sir Cyrus,' he
said with a prideful smile."
--Chapter 18: The Masamune!
"Soon, Lucca was standing and blasting at anything that moved in
her line of sight. 'Crono!' she bellowed. 'We need a better plan!'
At that moment, Crono thrust his sword vertically into the air, bringing
it down with an impaled bat twitching on the stained blade. He quickly shook the
bat off of
his weapon and replied, 'Have at it, brainiac!'"
--Chapter 19: Magus's Castle
There should be more to come as work on the novel continues.
