Currently, the Chrono Trigger Novel Project music
archives offers the Chrono Trigger soundtrack in modular (.it), emulated
(.spc), and midi (.mid) format. Unfortunately, MP3 or WMA files are not
legal to offer from copyrighted CDs, so they're not available here.
However, if you want to get the best version of the soundtrack, I highly
recommend checking out eBay.
I've had great luck finding brand new soundtrack CDs from there.
The following downloads can also be found in the Downloads
section (including a more compressed .RAR version of the emulated tracks). (Note: There is a plug-in for Winamp, which is available from
downloads.com, that
allows you to play SPC files.)
Modular files generally consist of .mod or .it files that are playable
through the ModPlug player. This player is available in the Downloads
section or from ModPlug.com.
The files in my archives have been created from the SPC files, so the quality is
decent and the sounds are mostly accurate. These aren't 100% clear, but
they sound pretty good coming from the computer. Unlike the SPC files,
these files have been given a stopping point. Hopefully, you will be
satisfied with their length (I set the stopping point myself).
Emulated files have been ripped directly from the emulated version of
the game. There are some SPC players out there, as well as some plug-ins
for other players (such as Winamp). These files contain endless loops,
just like they would in the game. In other words, they never end (kinda
brings back frightening memories from Lamp Chops, doesn't it?).
Midi files have been recreated on the computer (not by me) or
converted using "instruments" from the computer. I really couldn't tell
you exactly how these exact files were created, but they should sound decent.
The instruments used can differ depending on your computer's soundcard and the
settings in your computer for playing these kinds of files.
