"I first started everything in September of 1996…" says Wayne Kramer, writer and
head of the Chrono Trigger Novel Project. He had borrowed a copy of a game made
by SquareSoft (now Square-Enix) called Chrono Trigger. Like many others, he
found himself feeling for the characters, hoping that everything would be
alright in the end. After the game was over, his words were “Someone should make
a novel out of this” and he intended to do just that.
For those of you who have never heard of, or have never played, Chrono
Trigger, it’s a RPG (role-playing game) created by SquareSoft in 1995. It’s
about a group of people (and a machine) who hop back and forth through time to
save the world from a parasitic creature called Lavos, meaning “Big Fire.”
Throughout the past eight years, the project has had its ups and downs,
twists and turns, and overall craziness that carries itself with any work that
needs done, but Wayne feels that the completion of this novel is meant to be.
But for this project to be made into reality, there are many steps that
are going to have to be taken, the number one step being to rally as much
support as possible, and that’s why there is a petition. Support from fans,
support from gamers, support from anybody who believes that this idea is worth
the effort. Square-Enix has taken steps to prevent the publishing of their
characters in other forms, and therefore it’s going to take massive support on
the side of the project in order to catch the attention of somebody such as
Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, and overseer of Chrono
Trigger.
With the site, the forum, the petition, and support from everybody
willing to extend a helping hand, it’s very possible to see a Chrono Trigger
Novel become one of the classics of our time. Isn’t it a novel idea?
